About

img_2980Welcome to Airplanemama!  I am a mother of 2 who loves to travel and is determined to keep doing so as much as possible! My husband and I are both pilots for the Air Force Reserve which allows us to have a flexible schedule to travel and keep up with our civilian jobs which include Aerial Firefighting for him and mom for me! Before we had our kids we had no house and lived out of hotel rooms.  We would meet each other in various parts of the country and explore the surroundings.  Once we were pregnant, everyone’s favorite thing to say to us was “once you have kids, your traveling days will be over.” I was determined to prove the world wrong!  I traveled until I was about 8 months pregnant, waited for two weeks after my son was born and got back on the road, literally. We drove to  Eugene, OR to see family and we were back to our hotel room home life! At 4 weeks old, Mack had his first flight from Seattle to Atlanta.  It was just the two of us.  I was so worried about how it would go, but he was a champ!  Now at 2 years old and 100+ flights later, he’s a pro and is showing his little brother all of his tricks!

I’ve had several opportunities to speak at new mom groups and to offer words of encouragement to friends and family. My vision for this page is to encourage families to travel with their kids and to start them young.  I will offer my words of wisdom and what has worked or not worked for us.  Most of our journey’s are just the three of us so if you’re traveling with an extra set of helping hands, hopefully your trip will be that much easier!

Also, since I don’t know everything and every trip is a new experience, I would love to hear about your adventures as well! Whether it is by train, plane or automobile, I can guarantee you have something to share with other parents! Don’t leave out the bad stuff! As parents, we tend to want to prove we have our shit together, but I will be the first to admit, I certainly do not!  I have been down to the last diaper and outfit and had complete blowouts, luckily I was saved by a diaper machine in the Chicago airport.  From that day on I packed multiple outfits and enough diapers to last two days.  We all have lesson’s learned so please don’t keep them a secret!  Hopefully this can turn into a community of traveling parents sharing their triumphs and failures to encourage other parents to head out into the world with their sweet babies!

  1. Hi Airplane Mama
First let me say thank you for speaking at Blooma a few months ago; you inspired my husband and I to travel this month with our 3 month old.
One question I have is how you manage car travel to/from airport? We don’t want to bring our car seat and stroller when the rest of the trip we only need the carrier. We’re going to Charlotte and the only transportation from the airport is a car. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Leah! I’m so excited to hear about your upcoming trip! What we do to make life easy is have a friend drive us to the airport in our own car that way we don’t have to deal with car seat transfers and we can hop out right at the curb. If you don’t have a friend to drive you, reserve a cab or shuttle that has car seats. You can call cab companies directly and request one with a car seat. I would call ahead for your airport pickup in Charlotte as well because sometimes the wait time is much longer if you request a “car seat cab” upon arrival. Also, have you considered the train or bus in Charlotte? You can check out their website http://charlottenc.gov/cats/Pages/default.aspx. That might be a good option since you won’t have a carseat. I hope this was helpful! Please let me know what you end up doing and how your first trip goes!
